A person who does not read and study the Word of God is not truly educated. He is only partially equipped for life, even if he knows the classics, studies the essentials of grammar and math, or is adept with his computer. He may study philosophy and psychology, and still be troubled in his heart and soul. No course of study in the world equals the study of the Word of God.
We do not belittle the other subjects to emphasize the importance of the integration of the Word into a believer's life, but the Bible is the book for time and eternity.
A Biblical education should begin in the home and hurry to the church. However, many parents are not interested in this aspect of a child's education. Local churches, like First Church, must provide remedial Biblical education in the process of educating students about Jesus Christ.
One of the blessings of the J. Lee Foster School of Biblical Studies is that we are cognizant that the Biblical command for us to teach sound doctrine must be considered when churches select curriculum. Haphazard potshots at sin and sinners are not substitutes for a systematic exposition of Scripture. Preachers and teachers must be ready to teach, by being full of the Word and by having a keen interest in people.
